- Make time to declutter
As well as setting a removal date, set time aside to declutter your home. This is an activity which will take time. It is often easier to sort through things without other people around so try and schedule it in when family members or friends are likely to be out of the house. Having a clear deadline will add extra motivation to complete the decluttering process too.
- Start with the easy things
When you begin to declutter, sort the easy things out first – this will help to create more space to sort other items in as well as have a positive psychological effect. You could start with things such as paper or old junk mail that could have accumulated, out of date food in your cupboards or items of clothing that haven’t been worn in the last 12months.
- Be strict about what stays and goes
Throughout the process set yourself rules and stick to them. If you don’t need it, it won’t fit in the new house or if you haven’t used or worn it within the last 12 months then it is probably a good idea to take it to the scrap heap or a charity shop.
