Moving home is apparently one of life’s most stressful events. This stress can be multiplied with the presence of the beloved extended family members – pets. Your furry best friends can find the move just as frustrating as you do, so here are our top tips to ensure that they’re wellbeing is maintained and stress levels are kept to a minimum (even if yours aren’t).
Firstly – A Pet Sitter
The big move has been up and coming for a while, your pet is already confused as to why their house is slowly but surely being boxed away. On the moving day, chances are there are going to be a team of people assisting with the move coming in and out of the house. Therefore, to retain their calm levels before introducing them to their new humble abode, perhaps a friend or family member can look after them for a short while during the commotion.
Secondly – Settling In
Pets do require a little bit more TLC after a move. It’s highly likely that their new home will feel alien to them for a few weeks, and there are a few things you can do to ease the transition.
To help them out a little, show them their bed, toys and belongings. Also remind them of their favourite pieces of furniture they used to like to take their afternoon nap on!
Cats and dogs need to be treated a little differently. It’s recommended that dogs need to be slowly introduced to their new environment, with frequent walks around their new neighbourhood. Cats will adjust differently to their new home. It’s recommended to keep them in doors for the first few weeks after moving, and introducing them to their new environment slowly – one or two rooms at a time.
However, for both animals – ensure that their old routine as adhered to as much as possible throughout the move, and then back into it after the completion.
And finally, make sure that your pets have a tag! Hopefully, the move will run as smoothly as possible, with your four-legged friend falling in love with their new home as much as you love it. However, a tag with the correct telephone number will ensure that any mishaps are resolved easily and quickly with your pet being kept as safe as possible.
